Giacomo Costa founded his cargo ship company in 1854, passing ownership down to his 3 sons in 1924. In 1947, the name of the company was changed to Linea "C" (Costa Line) and it began adding passenger transport to their cargo ships. 1959 was when the line began offering pleasure cruises to the Mediterranean and Caribbean. "Even though there was an anticipation of a decline in passenger and migrant services to South America due to the ever increasing air travel, Linea "C" decided they needed a brand new superior, high quality ship in order to strengthen their share in both First and Tourist Class passenger service to and from South America" (http://ssmaritime.com/Frederico-C-1958.htm). The SS Frederico C took its maiden voyage in 1958, from Genoa to South America. The sleek, modern look of the liner pictured in this poster suggests that it depicts this new ship, which was identified by the blue ribbon that wrapped around the hull. A newer ship, The SS Eugenio C took over the route in 1966, but had 2 funnels, and the blue ribbon across the very top of the hull.
